After finishing the fourth book of Joseph Knox, I can say without a doubt that he never disappoints。 The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I couldn't feel the unwaning excitement in True Crime Story like the other books, even though I knew how different this book was from the Aidan Waits series and was based on real events。 After finishing the fourth book of Joseph Knox, I can say without a doubt that he never disappoints。 The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I couldn't feel the unwaning excitement in True Crime Story like the other books, even though I knew how different this book was from the Aidan Waits series and was based on real events。 。。。more

A cool format, but imperfect execution。 The dialogue didn't feel real, whereas, Taylor Jenkins Reid's books (who's format and success, I suspect inspired this book) feel genuine enough that you google her characters expecting them to be actual people。 It was good, but missing some soul, and made all the more unbelievable by its metafictive elements。 A cool format, but imperfect execution。 The dialogue didn't feel real, whereas, Taylor Jenkins Reid's books (who's format and success, I suspect inspired this book) feel genuine enough that you google her characters expecting them to be actual people。 It was good, but missing some soul, and made all the more unbelievable by its metafictive elements。 。。。more

This was just so much fun to read。 A tight-as-a-nut who-dunnit, framed in a highly original way。 All set in Manchester in 2011, my stomping ground from that time。 So, weirdly the geography and people seem so familiar it’s doubly real: Big Hands and The Deaf Institute and The Temple bar are all referenced。 The plot itself is very Twin Peaks: Zoe Nolan is a popular girl with secretssssss

This couldn't have come at a better time - I've been in a crime mood for a few weeks now, bingeing on crime tv series。Pretty original idea, a fake true crime story with an intriguing publisher's note alluding to some sort of involvement Joseph Knox had。The format was quite interesting - in January 2019 Joseph receives some emails from a friend, Evelyn, who is researching a missing person cold case from December 2011。 Evelyn interviewed several friends and family of the still missing Zoe Nolan, a This couldn't have come at a better time - I've been in a crime mood for a few weeks now, bingeing on crime tv series。Pretty original idea, a fake true crime story with an intriguing publisher's note alluding to some sort of involvement Joseph Knox had。The format was quite interesting - in January 2019 Joseph receives some emails from a friend, Evelyn, who is researching a missing person cold case from December 2011。 Evelyn interviewed several friends and family of the still missing Zoe Nolan, and is now piecing it all together and looking for further details。 She sends the material to Joseph to get his opinion and thoughts。The book is made out of email exchanges between them (with an occasional note from Joseph), but the bulk of it is made out of transcripts from Evelyn's discussions with Zoe's friends and family。I really enjoyed the format and it kept me guessing the whole way through。 I thought it was quite gripping and it was hard to resist the temptation of reading ahead to find out what happens。I did think it was a little bit too long, though。 And I didn't find it particularly believable that the characters had such clear recollections of events and conversations from 7 years ago。 Then again, we never know how reliable they are。I also wasn't too keen on the ending。 I guess it's part of the format, but it felt a bit rushed and too open for my liking。Overall, really enjoyed it! 。。。more

Such a clever book。 True Crime Story is the fictional account of an investigation into a missing girl who disappears from her University。 Lots of twists and turns and everyone is a suspect at some point。 Really inventive, fresh and clever。

Well, what a book this was。 I was completely surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this book。I'd say that style-wise, this is something like Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, in that it is told in interview format。 Also like Daisy Jones, the characters are very realistic, and the story, with the immersion of the author in it, feels very real。 Like a true crime story。 I really liked the format, just like I enjoyed Daisy Jones, though I know this won't work for everyone。 This is a fi Well, what a book this was。 I was completely surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this book。I'd say that style-wise, this is something like Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, in that it is told in interview format。 Also like Daisy Jones, the characters are very realistic, and the story, with the immersion of the author in it, feels very real。 Like a true crime story。 I really liked the format, just like I enjoyed Daisy Jones, though I know this won't work for everyone。 This is a fictional story about the disappearance of a Manchester University student in 2011。 Years later, an author discovers the case and starts investigating, interviewing the various people involved in the young woman's life, from her sister and her parents, to her boyfriend and her friends。 As the book goes on, each person reveals more about the missing girl, Zoe, and in turn each of them seem like they have something to hide。 I can honestly say that I didn't guess who it was by the end, and that, for me, is a very refreshing change from the usual crime and thriller stories that I read。 Usually I guess the ending, or if I don't I'm left disappointed by some other aspect of the book。 In this case, nothing led me to guess who had done it, but I was not surprised by the revelation, thinking back to all the little clues we'd got along the way。 The plot was compelling and kept me reading it all afternoon and well into the evening, desperate to finish it in one day。 The characters were interesting, intriguing, each with their own secrets and revelations。 I really enjoyed this book, which is why it got a full five stars from me。 I can honestly say, give this book a chance。 It surprised me: it might surprise you, too。 。。。more

I have really enjoyed this author's previous books so was looking forward to this, and it certainly didn't disappoint。 I don't think I have read a book like it before, at times I almost felt like I was watching a Netflix true crime drama (not a criticism), didn't have a clue what the ending would be, absorbing story that I just kept wanting to read, hated having to put the book down and get back to real life。 One of my top reads of the year without question, fantastic book。 I have really enjoyed this author's previous books so was looking forward to this, and it certainly didn't disappoint。 I don't think I have read a book like it before, at times I almost felt like I was watching a Netflix true crime drama (not a criticism), didn't have a clue what the ending would be, absorbing story that I just kept wanting to read, hated having to put the book down and get back to real life。 One of my top reads of the year without question, fantastic book。 。。。more

I am stunned。 This book was unlike any book I’ve read before。 It does have the same feel as “Daisy Jones and the Six”, at least the style of it, but author Joseph Knox takes it a step further。 I know this is labeled a work of fiction, and if it is, it has fooled me。 Whether you like crime stories or even if you don’t, if you like a good mystery, or realistic fiction, or if you just want to read a great book that’ll leave you wanting more while your jaw is hitting the floor, give this a read。 (No I am stunned。 This book was unlike any book I’ve read before。 It does have the same feel as “Daisy Jones and the Six”, at least the style of it, but author Joseph Knox takes it a step further。 I know this is labeled a work of fiction, and if it is, it has fooled me。 Whether you like crime stories or even if you don’t, if you like a good mystery, or realistic fiction, or if you just want to read a great book that’ll leave you wanting more while your jaw is hitting the floor, give this a read。 (Now that I’ve finished writing my review, I’m going to go on a google hunt to see if this story is actually fiction。 Yes, it’s THAT convincing。) 。。。more

This is a tough one to describe。It reads as a true crime book made up of a series of interviews between people whose lives intersect in one place at a certain point in time。 Most of the cast would be politely called unreliable witnesses; many were off their heads on drink or drugs when whatever happened, happened。 The others have legitimate reasons to be deceitful。 Joseph Knox even inserts himself into the narrative as an unpleasant associate of a key character。 TCS is a classic 'whodunit' prese This is a tough one to describe。It reads as a true crime book made up of a series of interviews between people whose lives intersect in one place at a certain point in time。 Most of the cast would be politely called unreliable witnesses; many were off their heads on drink or drugs when whatever happened, happened。 The others have legitimate reasons to be deceitful。 Joseph Knox even inserts himself into the narrative as an unpleasant associate of a key character。 TCS is a classic 'whodunit' presented in a very unique way。 Is there ACTUALLY a victim? Did a crime REALLY occur? Is EVERYONE lying? I really liked the concept of this book, it did take me a while to get into as it was so unusual, but once I did, I needed to find out what happened to Zoe。 A whole cast of unlikeable characters brilliantly brought to life。I can already see this so clearly as a TV drama - the script is basically there! Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book。 This is my honest opinion

A clever and very interesting way of telling a story which was very compelling, I would consider it even a 'page-turner'。 I enjoyed the interaction between Evelyn and Joseph as writers, considering all angles of the story as they go along, plus the rather unusual angle of Joseph Knox putting himself into his own story。 The characters were not spared in their flaws and as a reader, you could see the overlappings and contradictions as each of them remembered various events。 The pacing was spot on and the settings very well described。 I would really recommend this if you enjoy a mystery, thriller or crime novel。 I certainly look forward to investigating more of this authors books! 。。。more

This is almost a book within a book - the author recounting his experience working with another author on developing a true crime story which looks into the unsolved disappearance of a University student, Zoe Nolan, from her apartment building in Manchester in 2011。 Author Evelyn Mitchell is determined to uncover the truth behind Zoe's disappearance and we learn very early on that her investigations are not without their problems。 The story is told through a series of interviews with family and friends of the missing woman, as well as being interspersed with scenes narrated by the author, Joseph Knox, which echo the kind of narrative and the supposition and speculation that are to be found in all true crime fiction。 Scene setting, directing the attention of the reader to the key elements of all we are reading or hearing。 It feels like a true story, every part of it screaming authenticity, and in that respect, having it narrated, rather than reading it myself, gave it a podcast kind of air。

I don't want to go too far into the 'case' but it is fair to say that there are a whole host of suspects, the kind of unreliable witnesses that make getting to the heart of the story so very difficult。 There are few voices which felt trustworthy, all of then authentic in portrayal but problematic in terms of their history and the involvement with the victim。 We are drawn into Zoe's complex and tangled world, from twisted family relationships to unexpected friendships and a pseudo-celebrity status that makes her undeniably popular。 And yet nothing is as it appears on the surface and the more evidence that we are provided with, the more confusing the tale becomes, but in a way that still makes perfect sense。

I really liked the style of this book。 It reminded me of so many true crime books that I have read, focusing on the life of the victim and trying to piece together her final days and suppose what might have happened。 We hear from not only the friends and family, including her twin sister who is accused of jealousy and yet makes a compelling see to the contrary, but also the police involved in the investigation, and whilst this may be a 'cold case', it feels current and very real, Joseph Knox capturing the feeling of fact within a world of pure fiction。

If you like crime novels and you enjoy true crime stories, then I would heartily recommend this book - it's a perfect blend of both worlds。 I started listening to this book whilst on holiday with Mandie, and she was so engrossed, she had to buy a copy too just to finish listening to it。 For me, the audiobook really made it live, and the multi-cast recording was absolutely spot on, instilling in me a mix of emotions as I felt myself warming, and taking exception, to the various people brought into my world。 This is a complex story but one which, as a work of fiction, is very clever。 As a blended style of narrative, it is absolutely brilliant。 And there is a twist in this tale, one that will may knock the wind out of your sails, but one which just seems to tragically fit。 Definitely recommended。 。。。more
